Top Endocrine Publications of 2011: The Canine Thyroid Gland

In my second compilation of the canine and feline endocrine publications of 2011, I’m moving on to disorders of the canine thyroid gland. Listed below are 11 research papers written in 2011 that deal with a variety of thyroid gland topics and issues of clinical importance.

These range from a series of 35 dogs with multiple endocrine diseases (many were hypothyroid) (1) to a case report of megaesophagus associated with hypothyroidism in a dog (4); from a review of congenital hypothyroidism in both dogs and cat (2) to a great review of canine hypothyroidism (9); from studies of thyroid carcinoma (5,10) to an evaluation of serum IGF-1 determination in dogs with hypothyroidism (7); from diagnostic tests for hypothyroidism (2,6,9) to a report of cervical thymic carcinoma that mimicked thyroid cancer (3); and from hypercalcemia associated with canine hypothyroidism (8) to studies of the effect of anti-inflammatory doses of glucocorticoids on serum thyroid concentrations (11).
